What is a sitemap?

Indianapolis Website SitemapA sitemap is a map of the pages contained in your website. The sitemap itself can be one page or a set of pages (depending on how large your site is) which lists links of all or most of the pages in your site. The image to the right is an example of a sitemap.

Why is a sitemap important?

  • Google recommends it.
  • It helps "robotic" visitors (from search engines) find and index your pages which will ultimately help you get more exposure on the web.
  • It helps visitors understand your site's structure and layout, allowing them quick access to what your site has to offer, many times with just one click.
  • It can help you with planning your site.

Characteristics of a good sitemap

  • It' s the simplest page on your website.
  • It' s clearly titled " Sitemap" , no fancy names like "Website Tree", etc.
  • It' s not a "dynamic" sitemap which makes visitors " work" to get information.
  • It' s not used as the primary navigation of the site, it simply complements it.
  • A link to the sitemap is present on all pages.
